The purpose of this position is to provide operational management, clinical practice supervision and strategic leadership for a team of Occupational Therapists and Clinical Assistants working in Spinal Injury Services. The position delivers advanced Occupational Therapy services to stakeholders/consumers within Spinal Injury Unit at Princess Alexandra Hospital and Queensland Health to achieve excellence in patient care, education and research. 
This includes:
- Leading and managing Occupational Therapists, Leisure Therapist and Clinical Assistants working in Spinal Injury Unit services (including services of a complex nature).
- Providing operational management
- Provide MSH wide Occupational Therapy professional and operational advice on clinical areas and service delivery models

Your key responsibilities
Clinical / Technical
- Delivers specialised evidence-based Occupational Therapy clinical and consultancy services independently and exercise professional judgement for the management of a complex and diverse Spinal Injury caseload in accordance with accepted professional practices, legal and ethical requirements and the National Standards for Health Care.
- Exercises independent clinical judgement in complex clinical decision making in relevant Spinal Injury practice areas, adapting routine clinical practice as required and consistently integrating high level evidence. 
- Maintains and develops a high level of personal knowledge, skills and clinical experience in the specialist areas of practice through post-graduate qualification, professional development activities and / or developmental experience.
- Manages and supervises Occupational Therapy, Leisure Therapy and Clinical Assistant clinical services, in accordance with accepted professional practices, standards and principles including the legal and ethical requirements with a high degree of independence.
- Demonstrates managerial leadership in the development of professional standards on a HHS wide basis, and support others to contribute expertise.
- Proactively responds as a leader when clinical matters arise. 
- Holds specialist level knowledge in complex equipment prescription and funding systems .Collaboration, Teamwork & Consumer Engagement
- Provides operational and supervisory advice and direction to a team of Occupational Therapists, Leisure Therapist and Clinical Assistants to ensure effective service delivery and quality outcomes applying change management, conflict resolution and negotiation skills where necessary.
- Provides high quality clinical supervision and ensures staff have access to high quality clinical supervision to support effective and efficient service delivery of Spinal Injury Services
- Implement succession planning, competency training and skill development within the department/service.
- Fosters a team environment to ensure achievement of departmental/service objectives including providing constructive and effective feedback which assists staff to achieve solutions. 
- Produces high quality written clinical reports, documents, service reports and oral presentations as required and facilitate the completion of accurate and timely patient specific documentation and records ensuring that medico-legal requirements are met.
- Leads or participates in forums, networks, committees or professional groups at a Hospital & Health Service level, or State- wide level as appropriate and as requested/supported by manager.
- Represents Occupational Therapy department/service as a consultant and resource person on internal and external professional networks and/or committees as delegated by the Director/manager Individual and Work Unit Management
- Operationally and professionally manages and coordinates a team of Occupational Therapy, Leisure Therapy
and Clinical Assistants working within the Spinal Injuries Services including responsibility for:
                Human resource activities including supporting recruitment, orientation, clinical governance and performance appraisal and development
                Prioritisation, workload allocation and assistance with staff rostering within their clinical team
- Actively contributes to workforce planning and resource management to meet service requirements.
- Prepares, analyses and interprets data and trends for caseload allocation, service improvement, workforce planning, and resource allocation. 
- Develops monitors and reports on clinical practices and outcomes for the Occupational Therapy Spinal Injury Service provision through the collection, analysis and reporting of relevant data, key performance indicators and outcome measures.
- Ensures patients and staff are treated fairly and with mutual respect and understanding, regardless of cultural, religious, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds.
- Follows defined service quality standards, occupational health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
- Plan and advocate for in scope budget allocations and ensure cost-effective management of material resources within the service.
- Provide support to the Director with operational management duties and departmental service improvement where required and appropriate.

- Demonstrates leadership and expertise obtained through significant professional development activities, post graduate education or formal qualifications and actively pursues development and learning opportunities, including contribution to training of the Occupational Therapy workforce and other health professionals. 
- Applies a high level of knowledge of contemporary trends in health workforce and service delivery and identify in consultation with the senior staff and executives opportunities to identify and introduce innovative models of care.
- Provides leadership and change management to support local implementation by engaging stakeholders, developing appropriate educational support materials and resources and effectively communicating new developments and outcomes.
- Leads or contributes to Performance Appraisal & Development processes for team members, in conjunction with clinical experts, including contributing to performance management in conjunction with Director/manager as appropriate.
- Supplies strategic direction in accordance with Hospital and Health Service planning and state-wide priorities.
- Contribute to service operation agendas for the Division of Rehabilitation, Spinal Injuries Unit, Queensland Spinal Cord Injury Service (QSCIS) and Occupational Therapy Department as related to the Occupational Therapy Spinal Injuries Service. Service Improvement
- Leads the development and knowledge translation of evidence-based practices, procedures and protocols to improve the delivery of Occupational Therapy Spinal Injury Services at Princess Alexandra Hospital that informs Spinal Service delivery 
- Lead innovative quality/service improvement and research projects of significant scope and clinical importance to Occupational Therapy, seeking outcomes that influence standards of clinical practice and the delivery of services to meet local needs and influence broader organisational goals including 
publishing/presenting relevant work broadly.
- Initiates and leads review of clinical policy and procedures, work instructions or guidelines relevant to clinical area.
- Advises senior management and other relevant stakeholders on Occupational Therapy Spinal Injury Service needs and initiatives with the aim to assist with the quality management and strategic development of the service.
- Contributes to the Occupational Therapy professional body of knowledge through research publication in peer review journals, and/or the delivery of research, and/or evidenced based practice project outcomes at professional or clinical conferences


Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and/or registration or membership with the 
appropriate association within Australia. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the 
appropriate supervisor/manager, prior to the commencement of clinical duties.

The successful applicant must hold a tertiary degree (or equivalent) qualification in a relevant, eligible Health 
Practitioner Profession and be eligible for registration/ membership with the relevant allied health registration 
board and/or professional body.
- A post-graduate qualification in a relevant field will be highly regarded.
- (Occupational Therapist) The possession of a tertiary degree in Occupational Therapy from a recognised tertiary institution and registration as an Occupational Therapist with the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia (AHPRA) is a requirement for this role
- It is a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against the

    o hepatitis B

- This position requires the incumbent to operate a class C motor vehicle, and an appropriate license endorsement to operate this type of vehicle is required
