Position Description

The School of Information at San Jose State University invites applications for a tenure track faculty position to teach in the School’s BS in Information Science and Data Analytics degree program. The successful applicant will teach both on campus in San Jose and online and must be willing to relocate to the San Jose area. We are looking for faculty with expertise in at least one of the following teaching and research areas:

Information and Data Science

Information Security

Human Centered Cybersecurity

User Centered Interface Architecture and Prototyping

Big Data Analytics and Management

Information Visualization

We are also interested in faculty with a Sports Analytics background.

The School of Information (SOI) offers three master’s degree programs (MLIS, MARA, Informatics), the undergraduate degree in Information Science and Data Analytics,  a Gateway PhD program with Manchester Metropolitan University, a post-master’s certificate program in library and information science, an advanced certificate in the strategic management of digital assets and services, and a Teacher Librarian credential program.  The programs serve over 2,300 students drawn from most of the 50 states, as well as Canada, Australia, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. All graduate degrees and certificates are delivered 100% online.

Effective recruiting practices have resulted in an extremely diverse student body In the School of Information. In support of equity, inclusion, diversity, the School of Information has:

  • produced an important Webinar series on diversity and inclusion topics in the LIS workplace, organized by the IDEA committee
  • formed a student group focused on serving Latino and Spanish speaking communities. The REFORMA Student Group is only the second student group of the REFORMA National Association. 
  • an active First Generation student group
  • students who in general are very engaged in equity, diversity and inclusion. In 2021 the School’s ALA Student Chapter obtained a grant  for a book giveaway followed by a virtual book circle to discuss Sophia Thakur’s first book of poetry, Somebody Give This Heart a Pen (Candlewick, 2020).
  • As part of a college initiative developed an Achieving Equitable Student Outcomes Certificate for faculty This sixteen-week online program is for College faculty interested in developing course materials around principles of equity and inclusion. Content includes principles of equity, inclusion and social justice, equitable and inclusive course design, student support mechanisms, and approaches to equity-based assessment.

Successful candidates will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to equity and inclusion through their research, teaching, and/or service. We ask that all applicants include a Diversity Statement with their application package. Required Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate by start of appointment. 
  • Evidence of scholarly and professional achievement. 
  • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Priority will be given to candidates who possess the following:

  • Asynchronous online teaching experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach in at least one of the hiring areas listed above.
  • Conduct research in at least one of the hiring areas listed above.
  • Participate in state, national, and international professional organizations.
  • Participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
  • Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
