Reed College seeks an innovative and collaborative library professional to lead all aspects of collection development, management, and discovery for our liberal arts college community.  The library’s collection services department encompasses acquisitions, cataloging, serials, electronic resources, and discovery systems. The next director will play a leading role in shaping the library’s integration of print, digital, and licensed electronic collections. This role reports to the college librarian and is a member of the library’s leadership team.

This is a full-time, 12-month exempt position. Reed College offers an exceptional benefits package that includes medical and dental insurance, 403(b) retirement plan with 10 percent employer contribution, educational assistance for employees and their children, 22 days paid vacation, paid holidays, half-day Fridays in the summer and many other campus amenities, such as membership to the campus fitness center for employee and spouse. Starting salary for this position will be $78,000 to $82,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead acquisitions, cataloging, serials and electronic resources management, and systems for the library, including supervision of 4.5 FTE collection services staff.
  • Assist the college librarian in preparing the annual budget request and directly monitor spending of a $2.6M materials budget and endowed and gift funds dedicated to purchasing library materials.
  • Lead development of collection strategies that are responsive to the needs of our academic community while making optimal use of the library’s financial resources. Direct the management of data about library resources and usage that inform effective budgeting and collection management decisions.
  • Work collaboratively to develop and implement policies relating to library collection development, cataloging, processing, and maintenance of collections.
  • Build and manage relationships with library vendors.
  • Coordinate the library’s participation in collaborative collection building and related initiatives with consortial partners and effective use of library systems.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty and librarians to ensure broad participation in acquisition, evaluation, and maintenance of library collections.
  • May participate in the library’s research services as a liaison to one or more academic departments.

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library and information science and minimum of four years of professional library experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • A minimum of two years of supervisory experience.
  • Expertise in and experience with library acquisitions, cataloging, discovery systems, and/or serials and electronic resource management.
  • Understanding of current and emerging models of scholarly publishing, collections, and the library’s role in knowledge sharing. 
  • Ability to think creatively in developing and promoting the use of library resources and services.
  • Ability to evaluate, assess, and communicate the effectiveness of collections, processes, and services.
  • Interest in providing excellent services to undergraduates and faculty in an academic environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with vendors of library collections, information systems, and services.
  • Experience acquiring and providing access to library collections and services in a consortial environment.
  • Knowledge of or experience with licensing of electronic resources.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience in supporting diverse populations of students and faculty.
