Position Summary:
The Behavior Specialty Services Manager is responsible for the oversight of the Behavior Specialty support staff; provides on-the-floor supervision and management as directed by the Senior Director of Animal Admissions and Wellbeing. The ideal candidate is an efficient, compassionate leader that can multi-task, create a collaborative setting and maintain a cohesive team. This position is responsible for overseeing the appointment schedule for all trainers, behavior consultant and veterinary behaviorist. The candidate will also be responsible for interdepartmental communication, coordinating with clinic staff, shelter behavior team and volunteers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for ensuring the Behavior Specialty service team delivers high quality, compassionate patient care
Organize and coordinate the Behavior Specialty service team to effectively complete daily tasks and manage workflow - Triages behavior cases according to behavioral needs
- Trains team members to triage behavior cases
- Provides behavior consultations to clients
- Assist client with understanding and implementing of prescribed behavior treatment plans when needed
- Step in to fill in as needed for training appointments, cooperative care visits and happy veterinary visits for patients.
- Assist with product demonstrations, fitting and implementation of recommended behavior tools when needed
- Participate in medical/behavior shelter and clinic rounds as directed by the Senior Director of Animal Admissions and Wellbeing.
- Help provide behavior resources to the clinic and shelter team members and volunteers as needed.
- Understand standard behavior and veterinary terminology, procedures and animal health
- Follow veterinary care protocols for animals in the clinic - including medical, behavior and general care protocols for the health and well-being of the animals
- Handle all animals humanely, properly and with compassion and advocate for their safety and care
Act as a resource to the clinic and shelter team members to troubleshoot or problem-solve any administrative and client care issues, ensuring the highest quality of care for all patients, and coordinating communication across departments. - Assist in monitoring and addressing errors and implements strategies for prevention of future occurrences.
- Comply with all veterinary laws, adheres to all clinic protocols and all laws pertaining to controlled substances
Fill in house prescriptions as needed - Provide oversight over the Behavior doctor’s and support team schedules.
- Establish and achieve goals important to the Behavior Specialty service team and ensure accountability and collaboration in achievement of goals.
- Hold team members accountable for all aspects of their job responsibilities; providing direct reports with constructive feedback when they are not meeting expectations and taking appropriate disciplinary action when necessary.
- Ensure team members adhere to safety standards and veterinary care protocols.
- Participate in training and orientation of all team members.
- Ensure the Behavior Specialty service team operates within the guidelines as designated by all applicable regulatory bodies. (OSHA,DEA,USDA,AAHA,DOJ,)
- Collaborate with Behavior doctors to provide staff development through teaching, mentoring and training.
- Facilitate positive individual/team interactions and collaboration.
- Participate in management and department meetings.
- Facilitates communication between departments.
- Demonstrate and articulate the Joybound People and Pets to all team members.
Administrative
- Work to implement policies, procedures and standards of care located in the Employee Handbook
Additionally work to implement and develop policies, procedures and standards of care for the Behavior Specialty service team - Maintain a functional and seamless schedule for behavior appointments, triage, training and other behavioral appointments.
- Participate in staff recruitment, selection and on-boarding.
- Provide staff performance reviews, develop and monitor professional development and performance improvement plans.
- Maintain staff scheduling to ensure optimum staffing levels for all shifts.
- Provide timely communication to the Doctors and Director of Behavior & Welfare Programs.
- Demonstrate financial acumen; use financial information to make decisions.
- Assist in ordering supplies, team scrubs and in the maintenance and care of all clinic equipment.
- Complete and maintain timely, accurate records of all training sessions, data entry of behavior modification, email communications and other behavior notes.
- Work closely with Senior Director of Animal Admissions and Wellbeing, doctors, consultants, trainers and support team members to implement improvements in client handouts and behavior materials.
Oversees payroll and team member PTO schedules.
Requirements
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Commitment to the mission, values, goals and success of Joybound People and Pets
- Experience with humane animal handling and minimal restraint techniques of healthy, ill and feral patients
- Excellent verbal and written communication, attention to detail, and organizational skills
- Knowledge of basic dog and cat physiology, anatomy, husbandry and behavior as it relates to understanding the general health of animals.
- Basic understanding of the Five Freedoms and Five Domains
- Proactive and eager to take on additional responsibilities.
- Demonstrated reliability to maintain confidentiality.
- Exceptional customer service skills and professionalism
- Experience in caring for and handling animals in a safe, effective and humane low stress manner.
- Comfortable working in the veterinary hospital and animal shelter environment and willing to accommodate animals in the workplace.
- Excellent written, verbal and computer skills including proficiency in MS Office, Outlook, Word, Excel and Databases
Positive, motivational approach to team-oriented environment - High level organizational, management skills and knowledge of animal behavior and veterinary medicine
Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize. - Affection for animals, concern for their welfare, and a willingness to accommodate animals in the workplace.
Pre-employment background screening check is required. - Must have a valid California Driver’s License and must not have more than two at-fault incidents in a three-year period and no major at-fault violations in the last ten years and must be insured.
Education and Experience:
- 2-5 years experience in shelter/animal hospital setting, preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years training experience with ability to obtain behavior consultant certification (CDBC) within 6 months of hire
- CA Driver’s License and insurable driving record.
- College diploma
- Previous supervisory experience preferred
- Experience in animal health and handling preferred
- Prior experience working in veterinary or shelter environment, preferred.
- Fear Free® certification required, or to be obtained within the first 90 days of employment.
- Available to work weekends and holiday shifts as needed.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Specific physical abilities required by this job include:
- Work is performed in an animal clinic and shelter setting.
- Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, and climbing stairs while seeing patients.
- Regular sitting and data entry at a computer workstation
- Exposure to disinfectant solutions when in kennel & treatment areas
- Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals.
- Repeated lifting and carrying of animals weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Work environment includes constant exposure to animals and animal allergens.
- Tetanus and rabies inoculations are required or must be waived
- Drive an automobile.
Hours:
Full-time, exempt position requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week, including occasional evening and/or weekend work. Hours and workdays may vary according to the needs of the department.
