An exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled Principal Forensic Investigator (Mechanical) to join the team. This is a dynamic and multifaceted role that combinestechnical investigation with strategic support for health and safety processes across the department and wider Sedgwick organisation. The successful candidate will be involved in examining a broad spectrum of incidents in both domestic and commercial environments-from routine insurance claims to complex, high-value cases such as large marine losses.
The role offers a hands-on investigative element, requiring visits to incident sites and laboratories to collect evidence, interview witnesses, and occasionally dismantle machinery or equipment to determine the root cause of incidents. You may also be called upon to design and conduct tests in collaboration with external agencies, adding a practical and experimental dimension to your work.
Beyond investigations, you'll play a key role in promoting health and safety best practices, supporting internal procedures, and contributing to the team's reputation for technical expertise. This position demands a blend of engineering knowledge, analytical thinking, and interpersonal skills, making it ideal for someone who thrives in a varied and intellectually stimulating environment.
The skills you will have when you apply:
- Educational background: Degree-level qualification or equivalent experience - chartered status preferred, ideally supported by IOSH or NEBOSH certifications.
- Engineering expertise: Strong understanding and practical application of engineering principles.
- Health and safety knowledge: Proven experience in preparing and delivering health and safety processes and procedures.
- Expert witness experience: Ideally has experience providing expert opinion in legal or insurance contexts.
- Regulatory familiarity: Comfortable working with approved documents, codes, and standards relevant to the role.
- Interpersonal skills: Able to motivate, inspire confidence, and communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders.
- Flexibility and resilience: Willingness to work occasional long hours and maintain motivation in challenging situations.
- Organisational ability: Strong planning and time management skills.
- Technical proficiency: IT skills appropriate to the role, including report writing and data handling.
- Driving licence: Full UK driving license is essential for travel to incident sites and laboratories.
- Insurance industry exposure: Experience in the insurance sector is beneficial but not essential, as training will be provided.
