Major Responsibilities:
- Directs and oversees the AAH Accounting Operation's Team activities and month-end close process to ensure all financial transactions and related statistical data are recorded accurately and timely to the general ledger and related subsystems in adherence to the established monthly financial close schedule in collaboration with the Financial Reporting team in order to meet all internal/external reporting deadlines.
- Responsible for directing the development and deployment of financial statements and reports prepared by the Accounting Operations team including the financial reporting packages prepared for the executive leadership team as part of the month-end close process. The director also participates in presenting monthly accounting results to senior management and site finance leadership.
- Directs the identification, research, development and implementation of new accounting and reporting requirements due to changes in AAH's accounting policies and procedures, internal controls, process improvements and/or as required by new regulations or new accounting guidance. Provides U.S. GAAP accounting guidance and support to the technical accounting and financial reporting team, tax team and others.
- Ensures ongoing compliance with Advocate Aurora Health's internal control plan. Responsible for reviewing and directing the overall Accounting Operations internal controls plan and ensuring the plan continues to get updated as the business environment changes or as a result of process, system, and/or policy enhancements.
- Directs the coordination and completion of internal and external auditors' requests and queries in addition to holding the team accountable to meeting the required audit deadlines. Directs coordination and response of requests and queries related to reporting and regulatory requirements. Reviews estimation and risk areas while providing higher issue resolution. Participates in the development of the external audit plan with the auditors and the Financial Reporting Team.
- Directs departmental continuous process improvement, including identification of inefficiencies in work flow and implementation of new improved processes and procedures to ensure an accurate general ledger to support timely and accurate financial reporting and appropriate internal controls.
- Performs human resources responsibilities for staff which include interviewing and selection of new employees, promotions, staff development, performance evaluations, compensation changes, resolution of employee concerns, corrective actions, terminations, and overall employee morale.
- Develops and recommends operating and capital budgets and controls expenditures within approved budget objectives.
- Responsible for understanding and adhering to the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct and for ensuring that personal actions, and the actions of employees supervised, comply with the policies, regulations and laws applicable to the organization's business.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) issued by a State Board of Accountancy.
Education Required:
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting.
Experience Required:
- Typically requires 7 years of experience in a large corporate accounting department. Includes 3 years of management experience in accounting.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
- Advanced knowledge of U.S. GAAP, SEC/government rules and regulations, PCAOB standards.
- Advanced knowledge of general ledger and related financial and revenue cycle business intelligence systems (e.g. Workday and Epic).
- Demonstrated strategic influence skills, tactical planning skills, time management skills and conflict resolution skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate/collaborate effectively with all levels of staff, management, executives, providers, physicians and external organizations.
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or similar products.
- Strong background and experience in the preparation and review of health care financial statements, financial analytics and account analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to understand and analyze the underlying business and its implications on financial accounting and reporting.
- Demonstrated experience managing and leading teams through all phases of complex accounting projects.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities within tight time frames.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Position may require evening and weekend hours during month-end, quarterly and annual reporting periods.
- Position may require travel which may result in exposure to road and weather hazards.

Responsible for the general accounting function and provide financial guidance and analysis for Advocate Aurora Health (AAH) and its subsidiaries to ensure accurate and timely recording and reporting of financial and statistical data in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), governmental regulations and Advocate Aurora Health's accounting policies. The director is responsible for the timely and accurate completion of the AAH audit work performed by the Accounting Operations team. The director is responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of AAH's accounting systems, policies and procedures, process improvements and internal controls. Works in close partnership with the Financial Planning, Financial Reporting, Tax and Compliance, Supply Chain, Legal, Human Resources, and Information Technology teams.
