Roles Available in Location: Stevenage
Education required: To apply for a placement in Data, Automation, & Predictive Sciences (DAPS), you must be studying for an Undergraduate Degree in a subject related to the role. This varies for each role (defined below) and includes Life sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Business Analysis, Information Sciences, Statistics, Data Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Physics or a related field.
Please read the degree requirements for each role carefully before applying.
Other requirements: You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You must be enrolled at a UK (United Kingdom) or ROI (Republic of Ireland) University for the duration of your placement.
If you have already graduated with a Bachelor's Degree and are currently studying a postgraduate Masters, you are not eligible for this programme.
Language requirement: Written and spoken fluency in English
Expected Start date: July 2026
Duration: 1 year (approximately)
Salary: A salary of £25,400 plus a bonus.
Workplace Arrangements: Flexible working via performance with choice (office & home working may be available)

This advert contains multiple roles. All roles are within the Data, Automation & Predictive Sciences Department. Please read each description carefully before applying.
Department Overview
Data, Automation, and Predictive Sciences (DAPS) is transforming GSK's research into a model-driven, lab-in-an-automated-loop ecosystem that accelerates innovation, enhances scientific rigor, and delivers transformative medicines to patients faster. To this end, DAPS focuses on large-scale data generation, curation, analysis and prediction to deliver higher PTRS (Probability of Technical and Regulatory Success) assets in the clinic and unlock upper quartile ambitions. Our open Industrial Placement roles provide opportunities in a range of different areas that together contribute to our lab-in-an-automated loop ambitions so you can find out where your skills fit best.
Role 1 Research Data Science
Degree requirements: Life sciences, Bioinformatics, Computational sciences, Statistics, Mathematics
Placement Overview
The Research Data Science placement in DAPS involves designing, building, and deploying data analyses and predictive models for scientific discovery in GSK's research areas. The role will involve implementing and benchmarking different computational methods leveraging modern technologies (e.g. cloud, AIML) to produce insightful and informative results that enable key decisions in the early target and medicine discovery portfolio.
Key Placement Learnings
Performing analyses and building predictive models working in programming languages such as R and Python, while following best practice coding standards and leveraging cloud platforms.
Processing, analysing and integrating scientific data (e.g. transcriptomics, proteomics, assay).
Benchmarking approaches to quantitatively compare different algorithms/approaches.
Interacting with laboratory and computational scientists to understand scientific context.
Role 2 Scientific Data Engineering
Degree requirements: Physical Science (E.G. Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics) OR Biological Science (E.G. Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Physiology) or equivalent
Placement Overview
The Scientific Data Engineering placement in DAPS involves the design, build, and deployment of data pipelines, analyses and visualizations that interact with databases containing GSK's research data to address complex scientific use cases. The role will involve leveraging cloud native enterprise data platforms to deliver scientific data solutions that accelerate early discovery activities in GSK.
Key Placement Learnings
Design and build scientific data pipelines using technologies like python, R, and Nextflow and working on GCP to automate data flows in research context.
Interact with databases (e.g. PostgreSQL, BigQuery) to manage data and create views.
Create analysis tools and dashboards based on scientific end user requirements to effectively communicate results from scientific experiments for decisions.
Work in multidisciplinary team environments and develop presentation and communication skills.
Role 3 Cheminformatics
Degree requirements: Chemistry, Physics, Pharmacy, Maths or Computer Science.
Placement Overview
The Cheminformatics placement in DAPS involves applying computational techniques to discover better and safer small molecule medicines for patients. We use both modern and generative models for use in drug discovery and to solve problems encountered by our drug design teams. Furthermore, we work with state-of-the-art computational methods and infrastructure, including 2D and 3D modelling, quantum mechanics and molecular simulation. On this placement, you will work in a team with diverse research interests including classical cheminformatics, machine learning, explainable AI, uncertainty estimation, transfer learning and generative design using large internal molecular datasets.
Key Placement Learnings
Conduct data analysis and visualisation using cutting edge data and tools.
Contribute code to our machine learning platforms and models that we are developing on site.
Implement and evaluate novel methods which add to our automated design platform.
Utilise datasets from various fields such as bioactivity, physical chemistry properties, DMPK and Toxicology.
Role 4 Laboratory Automation
Degree requirements: Engineering, Computer Science, Life Sciences (e.g. Chemistry, Biology) or related.
Placement Overview
The Laboratory Automation placement in DAPS involves contributing to the design, build, and deployment of automation systems and robotics for complex scientific use cases. The role will involve (i) designing and implementing automation solutions and for physical laboratory processes and data flows and (ii) automating scientific workflows to reduce scientist hands on time, improve data quality and throughput and enable new capabilities.
Key Placement Learnings
Produce robust automation workflows that support a diverse portfolio of research activities and seamless data flow.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including scientists, IT, and engineering to apply automation to key scientific initiatives.
Utilise skills in liquid handler scripting languages, programming language R/Python and/or system schedulers to enhance functionality and value of GSK automation.
Collaborate with technical teams to establish requirements and develop comprehensive automation solutions in partnership with integration vendors.
Role 5 Lab Data Process Optimization
Degree Areas: Business Analysis, Information Systems, Computer Science, Biotechnology or related.
Placement Overview
The Lab Data Process Optimization placement in DAPS involves supporting the analysis and optimization of lab processes and data workflows in early discovery to enable the delivery of end-to-end technical solutions that improve and optimize these processes and workflows. This work involves collaborating with subject matter experts to define and refine business requirements, create user stories, analyse workflows, and ensure alignment with user needs.
Key Placement Learnings
Conduct business analysis to gather and document needs from a scientific user perspective.
Produce or update process maps to visualise workflows and identify optimization opportunities.
Develop user stories that articulate the features required for technical implementation
Test technical solutions developed by working with users to define acceptance criteria and facilitating user testing.
Role 6 Research Data Strategy
Degree Areas: Engineering, Computer Science, Life Sciences (e.g. Chemistry, Biology) or related.
Placement Overview
The Research Data Strategy placement in DAPS is focused on developing and applying the data standards and governance required to ensure that GSK's research data, whether generated internally or acquired externally, is treated as a strategic asset and can be used confidently by scientists to drive discovery and innovation. You will have the opportunity to contribute to articulating what it means for our data to be properly annotated, findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) as well as applying these principles in practice.
Key Placement Learnings
Analyse workflows and data structures to ensure data quality and integrity.
Define and implement controlled vocabularies and ontologies appropriate for analysis.
Integrate datasets across multiple modalities needed for drug discovery and development.
Interact with scientists and technical teams to elevate data standards.
