- Communications Manager (School and Unit)
Description
POSITION OBJECTIVE
In collaboration with the Director of School and Unit Communications and the Assistant Director of School and Unit Communications, the Communications Manager will produce clear, concise and effective communications that support designated schools and priority units at Case Western Reserve University. This individual will produce and edit written materials for their designated schools' and/or units' news and achievements, priority newsletters, websites, print and digital publications, marketing materials, and other vehicles as appropriate, touting achievements and engaging internal and external audiences in a way that supports the school or unit's reputation as well as the university's as a whole. This individual will play a critical role driving content that supports the strategic needs set by the marketing and communications directors for each school.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Plan content. Establish planning calendars that detail goals, formats and timing of communications across predetermined holistic communications plans. Consult regularly with colleagues across UMC regarding plan updates and outcomes. (20%)
Develop content. Draft communications content for a variety of audiences and channels, including email, web, print and more. Write, organize and build newsletters to meet key school priorities. Develop content for school- or unit-specific publications, as needed. Produce writing that is clear, concise, and conveys information in a manner appropriate to the messaging, channel and audiences. Understand the needs of various audiences--from prospective students through to donors--and of each communication piece, and tailor style and communication approaches writing accordingly. Ensure that all materials present a clear, unified, and positive image for the organization and are consistent with CWRU¿s brand. (45%)
Evaluate performance. Assist in evaluating the success of communications and campaigns and share results in a concise written brief. (15%)
Update website. Write, edit and complete web updates for assigned school/unit websites. Be involved in website redesigns or new website builds that fall within designated school/unit areas, helping to draft or coordinate content as needed. Share relevant news through appropriate communications platforms. (20%)

CONTACTS
Department: Daily contact with UMC team members to complete projects.
University: Regular contact with faculty and staff to exchange information.
External: Occasional communication with external contacts to exchange information.
Students: Regular contact with student employees to exchange information.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
No direct supervision.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: 5 years of experience in communications, marketing or a related field.
Education: Bachelor's degree in communications or a related field.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Proven abilities in generating marketing and communications copy, specifically for websites, emails or other digital platforms.
Ability to convey compelling, interesting stories in various storytelling formats.
Excellent writing, editing, proofreading and project management skills.
Effective time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines while working on multiple projects simultaneously. Highly organized and impeccable attention to detail.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant programs/software.
Ability to write quickly and well.
Ability to work independently and alongside a variety of individual work styles.
Mac platform experience.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Google Suite (Docs, Sheets), and Adobe Photoshop; InDesign knowledge a plus.
Knowledge of Google Analytics.
Knowledge of search engine optimization techniques and writing effective metadata.
Knowledge of content management systems, including WordPress and/or Drupal.
Demonstrated skills with email marketing platforms, including Mailchimp or Salesforce Marketing Cloud.
Strong knowledge of AP Style.
Ability to meet consistent attendance.
Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
Demonstrated history of successful support, education, and advocacy for all students, aligned with the values, mission, and messaging of the university, while adhering to the staff policy on conflict of commitment and interest.
WORKING CONDITIONS
General office environment. The employee will perform repetitive motion using a computer mouse and keyboard. Hybrid work option is available after completion of orientation period.
